Hello everyone,
Unfortunately, rain had the final say with the ladies’ league on Tuesday and it has been postponed to next Tuesday, the 20th. The course remains eminently playable despite all the rain and we are very fortunate compared to other courses in the area that are experiencing very wet conditions. The sun is also finally out, which has certainly raised everyone’s spirits!
Captain’s Drink Table sponsored Saturday – 17th August (and Dave Alexander Trophy)
The chaps at the “Captain’s Drink Table” are sponsoring this Saturday afternoon competition. The competition is Individual Stableford, but there are NO DIVISIONS. Prizes will all be meat and please note that there are no proxies available for prizewinners – you must attend the prizegiving. The guys are looking forward to a super day! The morning will also be Individual Stableford with no divisions and it is sponsored by Basil & Co.
For your interest, the Dave Alexander Bowl is older than Westlake Golf Club, having first been played at Clovelly in 1926. It moved with the members who founded Westlake in 1932 and has been played ever since. The first event was won by Dr J.O. Hayes, a founding member of Westlake and Dale Hayes’ grandfather.
Westlake Foursomes – new date
After being rained out, we have moved the Westlake Foursomes to the 15th of December. It is the only Sunday available for the rest of the year and it was very successful in December last year. Please diarise the date. It should be great fun.
S.F. Waterson Trophy – Sunday 25th August
Celebrating the purchase of the course and clubhouse in 1935, this open mixed event was named after Mr S.F. Waterson who donated the cup. It was shelved in 1973 but reintroduced in 1994. Everyone is welcome to play, including 5-day members. Book with the office on (021) 788 2020.
Wine and Dine – 7 September (Save the Date)
Our next Wine & Dine evening is on Saturday, 7th September. Members will have the first option. Bookings are now open with Tina, and you can give her a call to book your table and pay directly on (021) 788 2020. Please note that bookings are only confirmed when full payment is received.
The cost per person is R595, which includes a six-course meal, fresh ciabatta on the table, plus 5 wines and an after-dinner coffee. The wines and food will be exceptional, and the chef and winemaker are currently pairing the correct wines to complement each dish. The wines are being supplied by Fairview wines. Don’t miss this – it is going to be a very memorable evening!
Payment of Annual Subs – Due by 31st August 2024
To those of you who have already paid your subs, thank you.
A reminder that our new financial year starts on 1 September. Please note:
- If you want to change your category, please do so with plenty of time for Carmen to make the changes and mail them back to you. Feel free to mail her at membership@westlakegolfclub.co.za or give her a call at (021) 788 2020.
- Payment Options:
- Full amount paid in full by 31 August – EFT only, please.
- Debit Order monthly over 12 months. Please come into the office and sign a new form for the new financial year. It does not simply carry on, as the amount will change.
- Debit Order quarterly. Every 3 months starting 1 September. As above – sign in office.
- Pay the full amount by 31 October as per the Constitution in 3 equal instalments (31 August, 30 September, and 31 October).
- No other payment plans will be possible, due to the amount of admin required to manage numerous individual requests.
- Payment of subs – Please pay by EFT only. This saves the club on credit card and Clubmaster fees.
- NB! Reference when paying subs – Kindly use your “Account number” and name. You will find this number on your pro forma invoice.

For your information, our Constitution states the following:
- Annual subscriptions, prepaid green fees and other fees (e.g. locker rentals and affiliation fees) are due for payment by the first day of the Club’s financial year (currently 1 September).
- A member whose annual subscriptions and fees are not fully paid by 31 October and who, prior to that date, has not made satisfactory arrangements with the General Manager for payment of the unpaid amounts shall cease to be a member.
Joker Draw – Friday, 16th August
The joker draw is R35,500 this coming Friday. As usual, you can enjoy a light meal and our drinks specials, so pop down and give it a try! See you on Friday from 17h00. The draw is at 18h30 sharp.
Festival week – September
Golf bookings are filling up fast! All the booking sheets are in the foyer, and the office is also taking bookings on (021) 788 2020. Our annual Festival week is from Sunday, 22nd September to Saturday, 28th September. The Big Bash Party is also on Saturday, 28th September, and as always, it will be a “jol” with live music and fantastic food. Don’t miss this week!
Regarding the Big Bash on the Saturday, bookings are open. You can just phone reception to book your table.
Westlake members make W.P. IPT sides
Well done to Westlake members Shaun Le Roux and Daniel Copeman, who have both been selected to represent Western Province Golf Union at the upcoming South African Premier Interprovincial Championship (IPT) at Stellenbosch Golf Club from 16th to 20th September 2024. We wish all the WP team members well too. Congratulations, gentlemen.
Congratulations to Odette Booysen, who has been selected as a member of the Western Province Golf Team for the upcoming Women’s Inter-Provincial Tournament at Humewood Golf Club in Port Elizabeth, which will take place from 24th to 27th September 2024. Well done, Odette!
